  • Intro:

Crystal Palace fought back to claim a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in the English Premier League on Wednesday (11th February), as Alan Pardew faced his former team for the first time since leaving Tyneside.

Papiss Cissse put the visitors ahead three minutes before half-time before Fraizer Campbell's 71st minute leveller.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alan Pardew, Crystal Palace manager:

(Q: Was there are part of you hoping for some sort of vindication against your former team tonight?)

"No. No, I just came here to try and get three points. And, knowing that Newcastle have some very, very good players, very difficult. That was the only focus really, but it was nice to see the players apply themselves - both sets of players, I thought - in a good manner and, as I say, I think the points (one each) was fair."

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Carver, Newcastle United head coach:

(Q: Are you happy with a point?)

"I think so, yeah. I think so, I mean, when the lads came in to see me after the warm-up they were complaining about the state of the pitch. I know they (Crystal Palace) have just relaid it, but it was quite lively, so I knew we weren't going to be able to get it down and pass it and play our passing game. But I thought we dealt with it, I thought we dealt with the physicality of the opposition."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alan Pardew, Crystal Palace manager:

(on whether John Carver, his successor at Newcastle, has what it takes to be a Premier League coach)

"I think John's got the credentials to be a Premier League manager. I look at other Premier League managers and see no difference in the qualities that John possesses. I wish him all the best, I love him as a guy, as a colleague and as a friend, and that will never change, and I think he's conducted himself superbly so far."

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Carver, Newcastle United head coach:

(on whether Newcastle have a good platform to build on, now that they are 10 points above the relegation zone)

"absolutely, I mean, we see how difficult it is to win games, you know. I've now had six games. We've lost two, out of six. Now, this is my glass being half full. We've lost two. But we've lost to possibly the champions, Chelsea away, where we put in a good performance, and we lost to Southampton, late on, who were third in the division at the time. Now they're two difficult games."
