  • Intro:

The United States could be back in the Fed Cup World Group next year after Venus Williams beat Maria Irigoyen of Argentina 6-1, 6-4 to put the Americans into the play-offs with an unassailable 3-1 lead.

    Script:

A place in the Fed Cup World group play-offs was up for grabs when the United States faced Argentina in Buenos Aires. The USA led 2-1 going into this rubber and so Venus Williams had the chance to seal the win without the need of a decisive doubles match.

She was simply too good for world number 199 Maria Irigoyen.

Williams showed her quality throughout a dominant first set.

That took her 5-1 up and she served out the set with ease.

But roared on by the home support Irigoyen put up some resistance, the second set was for a time in the balance.

Williams did break serve but Irigoyan was still battling to keep the tie alive.

She could only fight for so long though and the American went on to win 6-4 and seal her country's place in the play-offs that will be played later this year.
