Intro:
India's Anirban Lahiri shot a four under par final round of 68 to win the Malaysian Open by a stroke over Bernd Wiesberger of Austria in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (8th February).
Script:
The final round of the Malaysian Open began with Bernd Wiesberger holding a two shot lead over Alejandro Canizares of Spain.
After the first two holes, it seemed that the Austrian might run away with it - he birdied the first and the second, while Canizares bogeyed the second, to leave Wiesberger with a five shot cushion.
However, things didn't play out quite as expected.
Defending champion Lee Westwood couldn't reproduce the form that had kept him up with the leaders over the first three days.
Westwood's fellow Englishman Paul Waring couldn't make a charge either - five birdies were cancelled out by six dropped shots over the course of his round.
Canizares had a torrid time going out and was five over for the day at the twelfth tee, but he battled back to card a 74, two over par, and he joined Waring on thirteen under to share third place on the leaderboard.
Wiesberger's round stalled at the fifth with a double bogey seven.
In the end Wiesberger could only manage a two over par 74 ending on fifteen under par.
India's Anirban Lahiri raced up the leaderboard in Saturday's third round with a ten under par 62 and carried that form into the final round, with four birdies in his first five holes.
He holed a monster putt from the fringe for birdie and took the lead at sixteen under.
Lahiri parred the last and had a nervous wait as Wiesberger tried to birdie the 18th to force a play-off.
It wasn't to be, handing the a well-deserved title to Lahiri
