  • Intro:

US$129m to be spent on improving security in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Olympics.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Andrei Passos Rodrigues, Secretary of Special Events at the Ministry of Justice:

"An important focus in preparation (for the Olympics) will be the training of members of the security forces. During 2015 and 2016, we will also make some investments (in addition to those done in 2014); the total amount over the three years will be about 350 (m) million (Brazilian) reais (129 million US dollars)."

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Andrei Passos Rodrigues, Secretary of Special Events at the Ministry of Justice:

"Last week we had meetings with the anti-terrorism agency of the United States to expand communications with our main partners; not just with the United States, we already had meetings with Germany, we already made contact with the French embassy, so we are intensifying international cooperation, exchange of information, and training."

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Jose Mariano Beltrame, Rio de Janeiro's State Security Secretary:

"What we had here was a spike of stray bullets that did not occur during a confrontation with police officers. I tell people that public security is a feverish patient, and the patient will never recover from that situation, that's a utopia."
