Player reactions following Thursday's opening round of the Malaysian Open at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lee Westwood, England, joint leader on -6:

"Yeah, I had a lot of chances, yeah. I played the par fives okay, I just didn't, you know, take the chances on those, I only played those in one under par - so I expect, well I hope to do a little bit better on the par fives tomorrow. But everything else was pretty good, my iron shots were pretty good, distance control was alright, considering the conditions that was good, putted very nicely - I'm starting the ball on line a lot, left a couple short in the middle (of the round), just got fooled by the grain. But all in all, I was very happy with the round. That's probably the trickiest I've ever seen this golf course play."

SOUNDBITE (English) Graeme McDowell, Northern Ireland, joint leader on -6:

"Yeah, pretty hot. Oh, I'm very happy, I mean I hit the ball great today, drove it well, gave myself a lot of looks for birdie, hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in and holed a couple of longer ones. So... just the one mistake from the middle of the fairway, just kind of lost my concentration for a second, very easy to do that in this heat. But, you know, generally very, very happy with that start. And I've enjoyed the way this golf course looks since the first day I saw it and enjoyed playing it this morning, good company with the boys... and it was a solid start."

SOUNDBITE (English) Paul McGinley, 2014 European Ryder Cup captain, -3:

"To be honest I didn't play very well. Absolutely delighted to shoot three under par. I really struggled with my swing, got underneath it all day long. Putted well, kept the ball in play, started with a bogey finished with a bogey. In between, no bogeys and a few birdies. So, overall a good score. So the score's obviously more important than the swing, so I've got to do a bit of work on that."
