Australia claimed their first ever piece of silverware since joining the Asian Football Confederation, after they beat South Korea in extra time to win the AFC Asian Cup on Saturday.

The advantage of being in Sydney clearly gave the Socceroos that extra bit of motivation, as their first chance came just 8 minutes in with Captain Mile Jedinak's freekick going just over the crossbar.

Tim Cahill also gave it a try, and his effort forced Kim Jin Hyeon to produce an impressive save.

South Korea fought back as well. Son Heung Min's volley came so close to becoming the opener just 13 minutes later.

South Korea boasted the impressive feat of never having let in a goal in the entire tournament, until Massimo Luongo shattered their dreams. He produced a cheeky turn before firing a low shot from the distance to open the score.

It seemed all was signed sealed delivered for the Aussies... until added time! Son Heung Min slipped past the Australian defence to keep their hopes alive. This gripping final was not over yet.

Extra time was a tense battle, but it was eventually the home side who restored their lead. Tomi Juric's cross was palmed away by Kim, but it went straight to James Troisi who blasted it home.

This was enough to seal the title for the Socceroos who won their first title in their 9 year history in the Federation. South Korea it seems would have to wait for their third title, having not won the cup for 55 years.
