Mixed fortunes for the Williams sisters at the Australian Open

  • Intro:

American teenager Madison Keys advanced to the Australian Open semi-finals after overcoming a thigh injury to beat Venus Williams 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on Wednesday (28 January) in Melbourne.

Serena Williams saw off 11th-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Wednesday (28 January).

    Script:

Venus Williams knew that a win in her Australian Open quater final against fellow American Madison Keys, could set up a semi final with her sister Serena.
But Keys had other ideas. She took the first set 6-3.

Keys then received treatment on her leg after dropping serve in the second set to give Williams a 4-1 lead.

But after the medical timeout, the 19-year-old came back to break Williams' serve twice to level the set at four-all, but Williams then broke her next service game and served out the set.

The game was finely balanced at one set all.

It also featured 12 service breaks, seven won by Keys, and 83 combined unforced errors.

But it was Keys who took the victory, winning the 10th game of the third set, taking it 0-40 on Williams' serve to progress to the quater finals.

So there would be no, all Williams semi final, but how would Serena fare in her quater against Dominika Cibulkova?

The number one displayed her immense power, reeling off heavy returns that included 58 winners compared to 38 from the Slovakian, and took the first set 6-2.

It was simple for the American, and after the match Cibulkova admitted that Serena Williams was just too good on the day.

Williams took the second set 6-2, taking the victory in just 65 minutes to set up an all American semi with Madison Keys.
