Senegal 'surprised' Sakho is playing

  • Intro:

Ahead of their crucial match against Algeria, Senegal head coach Alain Giresse says he is surprised Diafra Sakho is playing for West Ham despite being unable to join the national team at the African Cup of Nations.

    Script:

"First we'll worry about tomorrow's match and not about people who are not here. But first, let me make just one remark: I'm very surprised he's playing, because when you can't take the plane for six weeks, can you play a football match? And to you, my English friends, maybe you have some miraculous medical treatments and further than that, if you want to pursue this, it is an administrative matter that is beyond my remit. But, if such circumstances occur again without being spoken about, it becomes bad news for national teams. It would be an open door for such things to happen again, i.e. we will have many players who are 'unable to travel', but can still play."

"So we can't go into this game thinking that a draw will be enough. We came to Africa saying that we should look at these three matches as winnable and that is still our mind set. But of course the circumstances could mean this is not the way it turns out."
