Defour off as Standard beat Anderlecht 2-0

  • Intro:

Steven Defour was sent off on his return to his old club as Standard Liege beat Anderlecht 2-0 in a heated Belgian Pro League encounter.

    Script:

Not the nicest welcome back to his old club for Steven Defour. A pretty clear message for the Anderlecht midfielder from the Standard Leige fans who used to support him.

And in a fixture that is often already heated, this simply sent Defour to boiling point.

Half-an-hour in, he was booked for kicking the ball high into the crowd.

And early in the second half he inexplicably did it again.

Defour claimed he kicked the ball out to allow Standard's Milan Milec to receive treatment, but it looked like there was more than a little venom behind his kick into the crowd.

    Defour red and off.

The home crowd could barely contain their delight but Defour simply refused to leave the pitch and the Anderlecht fans began to cause chaos. Seats were hurled from the stand despite efforts from the players to calm things down.

Eventually Defour left the pitch, and there was some football.

Standard made their one-man advantage count when Adrien Trebel crossed for Laurent Ciman to volley home.

And two minutes from time, Standard sealed the win when Igor de Camargo neatly flicked home after good work from Yuji Ono.

So bragging rights for Standard today but they still trail their second place rivals by 6 points.

As for Defour - an afternoon to forget.
