Ott Tanak, sitting in fourth, but then this happened.
The error cost him 18 minutes at the Monte Carlo Rally.
Despite the best efforts of fans to get his Ford Fiesta back on the road.
Sebastien Chardonnet was less fortunate.
There were no fans to help when the ice caught him out.
The day belonged to Sebastien Ogier, despite driving conservatively and surrendering more than a minute.
He holds a 43 second advantage going into the final day.
Team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala closed the gap as the Double World Rally champion refused to take risks on the ice and snow-covered roads in the mountains.
The final leg starts from Monaco on Sunday - drivers face three stages covering more than 50 kilometres before the finish line.
