Bouchard downplays Australian Open 'sexism' row

Saturday, January 24 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Eugenie Bouchard says she is happy to twirl on court as long as male players are asked to 'flex their muscles'. Twelve-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King called the request by interviewer Ian Cohen for Bouchard and Serena Williams to show off their outfits on court following second-round wins 'truly sexist'. Meanwhile Grigor Dimitrov looks ahead to playing Andy Murray in the Australian Open last 16 and Simona Halep reflects on joining Bouchard in the fourth round.

SOUNDBITE (English) Eugenie Bouchard, seventh seed:
(On if she'd heard about 'twirlgate')
"A little bit. You know, I stay out of this stuff, but I heard a little bit. My friends are texting me saying I dance and twirl well and stuff as jokes. Yeah, I think it was just kind of funny. You know, I'm fine with being asked to twirl if they ask the guys to flex their muscles and stuff."

SOUNDBITE (English) Grigor Dimitrov, tenth seed:
(On the prospect of facing Andy Murray in the next round)
"Well, it's a great matchup for me. I'm always excited to play against him. You know, I had a tough loss against him in Paris. So, you know, it's a good matchup. I always like that kind of challenge. I think physically and mentally I'm ready to play that match and really give 100% from myself..."

SOUNDBITE (English) Simona Halep, third seed:
    (On her win)
"I'm okay with my game. I played well today, better than the second round, so this thing is good. She was very strong and I just wanted to play my game, but, you know, it was a great, great match for both of us. I was hitting aggressive and I stayed very close to the baseline. I served well. So I'm happy with my game now."
