There were wins for men's ninth seed David Ferrer and Jerzy Janowicz, who beat 17th seed Gael Monfils in the Australian Open on Thursday. Women's eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki was beaten by Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, while Petra Kvitova beat Mona Barthel.

    Script:

Ninth seed David Ferrer came from a set down to dispatch Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 at the Australian Open on Thursday.

The Spaniard, a two-time semi-finalist in Melbourne, will now play 18th seed Gilles Simon in the round three.

17th seed Gael Monfils was dumped out of the tournament after a five set epic with Poland's Jerzy Janowicz.

Janowicz trailed two sets to one, but came storming back to take a 6-4, 1-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win in three hours and seven minutes.

Janowicz has never been past the third round in the Australian Open and will be looking to go beyond that when he meets 12th seed Feliciano Lopez next.

In the Women's competition, Victoria Azarenka, who won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, won her battle of former World number one's by beating Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

The Belorussian looks to be back to her best after a long spell out due to injury after a commanding win over the eighth seed.

Fourth seed Petra Kvitova had a straight sets 6-2, 6-4 win over Mona Barthel.

The current Wimbledon champion will come up against Madison Keys in the third round
