Kei Nishikori returned to Grand Slam action for the first time since his run to the U.S. Open final, beating Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-2 on Tuesday in the first round of the Australian Open.

The fifth-seed dropped his opening service game but recovered the break quickly and weathered a difficult opening match against Almagro, who reached the quarter-finals in his previous visit to Melbourne Park in 2013.

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka began the defence of his Australian Open title with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Marsel Ilhan.

Wawrinka, seeded four this year, was barely tested against his 100th-ranked Turkish opponent, striking 34 winners and saving the only two break points he faced.

Novak Djokovic began his quest for a fifth Australian Open title when he took to the court on Tuesday to face Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia.

Djokovic, who said he had flu symptoms on the weekend, showed no apparent signs of illness in dominating the 116th-ranked Bedene 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Also in the men's draw, eighth seed Milos Raonic of Canada fired 30 aces in a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-3 win against Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko.
