Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt made his first appearance of the Australian Open on Tuesday and in front of a noisy home crowd, the 2005 runner-up moved into the second round with a four-set victory over Chinese wild card Ze Zhang.

Apart from the second set Hewitt was in control of the match that lasted two hours and twenty minutes, taking a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 win.

The triumph sets up an encounter with unseeded German Benjamin Becker, who put out Frenchman Julien Benneteau, seeded 25.

In the last action of the day at, seventeenth seed Gael Monfils came back from two sets down and 0-3 in the fifth to beat fellow Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-7 (3-7), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.

Monfils produced some truly breathtaking tennis at times - including this shot between his legs, before returning the volley with an unbelievable cross court backhand winner.

Pouille cracked in the ninth game of the fifth, losing his serve after leaving a defensive Monfils shot, which dropped inside the baseline.

Monfils duly served out for the win in two hours and 48 minutes and will play Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in round two.
