And Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic needed only 63 minutes for her 6-1, 6-4 win over Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.

Next up for Azarenka is U.S. Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark who also eased her way into round two, beating 18-year-old American Taylor Townsend 7-6 (1), 6-2.

Agnieszka Radwanska wasted little time in moving through to round two, as the Polish sixth seed lost only 3 games as she crushed Kurumi Nara of Japan 6-3 6-0.

Finally, Serena Williams made a solid start towards capturing a 19th career Grand Slam with a 6-0 6-4 win over Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium.

Williams has already won five Australian Open titles, her most recent in 2010.
