Day one of the Australian Open and the tournament has already served up a number of upsets in the women's draw.

The biggest scalp - Fifth-seeded Ana Ivanovic who struggled with her serve and lost in three sets to Lucie Hradecka.

The 2008 finalist had 10 double-faults and made 30 unforced errors, handing her Czech qualifier a famous win.

Unseeded Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu caused the second major shock of the day - ousting number nine seed Angelique Kerber in three sets.

Germany's Julia Goerges meanwhile chalked up a minor upset by knocking out Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

    Simona Halep restored the order.

The third seed continued her strong start to the year, dropping only five games, to overcame Karin Knapp in straight sets.
