Uzbekistan were up against Saudi Arabia in the final Group B match of the Asian Cup in Melbourne on Sunday.

While Saudi Arabia needed only a draw to advance to the knockout stage, Uzbekistan had to win to go through.

And the Uzbeks started the game with a bang, scoring in just the second minute.

Sardor Rashidov burst into the area and fired home with a low shot which went right through the legs of Saudi goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah.

Saudi Arabia were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty on the hour mark, veteran defender Vitaliy Denisov the offender.

Mohammed Al Salhawi stepped up and drilled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.

Uzbekistan regained the lead after coach Mirdjalal Kasimov sent on substitute Vokid Shodiev.

His impact was immediate, as he headed in a perfect cross past Abdullah.

Saudi Arabia poured forwards in desperate search of an equaliser, but they were punished on the break with 11 minutes remaining.

Jasur Khasanov picked out Sardor Rashidov, who, with plenty of space, beat the keeper for his second goal of the match.

The 3-1 victory means Saudi are eliminated at the group stages for the second consecutive Asian Cup.

Kasimov's men on the other hand will now face South Korea in Melbourne on Thursday.
