  • Intro:

Gary Stal of France came from 10 shots behind to capitalize on an improbable meltdown by Martin Kaymer and win the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship after a frantic final round on Sunday (18 January).

    Script:

Martin Kaymer looked to be cruising to a fourth title in Abu Dhabi after making three birdies in his opening four holes to extend his six-stroke lead from overnight.

Incredibly however, the German managed to drop six shots in seven holes around the turn.

Stal, who is ranked 357 in the world, pounced as he produced a stretch of six birdies from holes four to eleven.

He then held his nerve down the stretch, picking up another shot at the 16th to capture his first European Tour title.

The 22 year-old Frenchman signed for a seven-under-par 65 for 19 under overall at the tournament enough to secure the title.

Germany's Kaymer shot 75 for 17 under and third place in a disastrous final day of golf.

Meanwhile, world number one Rory McIlroy went around the course with a 66 to finish second, a stroke behind Stal.
