The South African Open Championship; the second oldest Open competition returned for its 104th edition.
2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel dropped just one shot in his opening round.
The 30 year-old signed for a four-under-par 68.
Schwartzel was playing with friend and fellow South African Richard Sterne.
And a storming back nine - including a birdie at the 18th - left him on five-under.
Denmark's Lasse Jensen also posted a 67.
Ernie Els completed the trio of players at five under.
The four-time major winner dropped a shot at the par-four 12th - but that was the only blemish on Els' card.
England's Andy Sullivan made a huge surge up the leaderboard after the turn.
Three successive birdies were immediately followed by this eagle chip at the 15th.
Alongside Sullivan at six-under is South Africa's Jbe Kruger.
Kruger made this putt for a birdie at the 15th - and also picked up a shot at the last hole for a flawless 66.
