Seventh seed Carla Suarez Navarro faced Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Wednesday, for a place in the quarter finals of the Brisbane International.

Navarro made a strong start to the match and opened out an early 3-1 first set lead.

But her experienced opponent - the current world number 60 - forced her way back into contention and as errors began to creep into the Spaniards game, she took full advantage.

Lucic-Baroni duly took the opening set 7-5 to put Navarro under real pressure.

The seventh seed responded impressively as she slowly began to find her range.

Her trademark power and aggression came through in the second set, which she took 6-3, with her forehand in typically ruthless form.

While never able to completely subdue Lucic-Baroni, Navarro always seemed to hold the edge in the third set and won the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

She will now face top seed Maria Sharapova for a place in the final four.
