Bizarre: The ancient game of Haxey Hood

Thursday, January 08 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Action from the annual Haxey Hood competition, which sees villagers try push a 'hood' into a local pub.

    Script:

UPSOUND: (English) Dale Smith, Haxey Hood fool "Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to play the ancient game of Haxey Hood."

That game involves this man, the Haxey Hood fool throwing a leather tube known as the hood up in the air. People from the North Lincolnshire village then form a rugby-type maul called a sway and try to direct the hood to the pub of their choice.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dale Smith, Haxey Hood fool

"It's a community thing, you know, we play this for everybody in the villages, this is about getting everybody back to the villages and people come from far and wide. There are people I see, I never see them any other time apart from Haxey Hood day and that's what it's about, community."

Exhaustion set in for a few, which was fair enough as it lasted over an hour an a half. The winning pub was the Loco, ending a ten year wait for the big prixe. The hood will now stay here until they go again in 2016.
