Broad on Cook, Pietersen and World Cup

Tuesday, January 06 2015 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Stuart Broad talks about Alastair Cook losing the England one-day captaincy, the potential return of Kevin Pietersen to international cricket and England's World Cup chances. The bowler spoke to SNTV as he got some golf tips from Europe's Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley, just a day before heading out to Australia.

    Script:

Just hours before flying out to the cricket World Cup Stuart Broad relaxed by spending some time with Europe's Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley. England's one-day cricketers have a new captain now after Alastair Cook was dropped for trip to Australia.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Broad, England cricketer:(Q: Were you surprised to see Alastair Cook axed as England's ODI captain?)

"I'm disappointed for Cooky (Alastair Cook) no doubt. He's a very good friend and he's led the team for three and a half years leading towards a World Cup. But he also understands it is a results based business sport."
And many think England's results would improve if Kevin Pietersen returned but Broad thinks his time has gone.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Broad, England cricketer:(Q: Kevin Pietersen has been vocal that he'd be open to return to the England team can you ever see it happening?)

"It's a tough one for me to say. I'm not a selector, but I think it would be quite unlikely now. He'd need to score some more runs. He hasn't played any red ball cricket for over a year and he's had quite a lean time of it in white ball cricket as well. He'd probably need to get back into county cricket and have a special time of it. I can't see it personally. He's now 34 and obviously going into this World Cup we've got a hugely exciting team."

And despite a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka, Broad says the players believe they can succeed somewhat more than the pundits.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Broad, England cricketer:(Q: How do you rate England's chances in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup?)

"We're underdogs. Australia will probably be favourites on their own patch, but we've got the excitement in this changing room and this world cup squad to do something special.

England start with a day-nighter against the hosts in Melbourne on February the 14th.
