The British number one took the game to Nadal from the start and broke the world No 3's serve at the first opportunity before comfortably taking the first set.

The Scot broke again in the second game of the second set and, after saving five break points in the next game, broke again to take a 4-0 lead.

Murray was struggling with his first serve but Nadal again failed to convert another four break points in the next game before the 27-year-old served out for victory.

The six-man exhibition event is the unofficial season opener with top seeds Nadal and Serbian Novak Djokovic receiving byes to the semi-finals.

Murray will now play world number one Djokovic in the final on Saturday.
