  • Intro:

KFOR on Friday (12 December) marked the historic WW1 Xmas game between English and German soldiers.

    Script:

It's an ordinary football match, commemorating an extraordinary moment in history.

Soldiers from the NATO-led Kosovo Force, coming together to remember the Christmas Truce football match of 1914.

British forces Lieutenant Colonel David Jones.

SOUNDBITE David Jones, Lieutenant Colonel in British forces serving with KFOR in Kosovo
"There are 15 different nationalities playing football on this pitch today who are part of NATO. So I would not say it's a happy family but more of a close relationship than maybe it was in the past during the First World War and Second World War. So we are now colleagues, friends and if we need to, we fight along side each other and not fighting against one another."

A century ago on Christmas Day, German and British soldiers left their trenches for no man's land in a few scattered locations to play football against eachother.

It's become known as the Christmas Truce football match.

Proponents of the sport have since cherished that day as proof, there's little that can bridge a man's differences better than football.

German forces Lieutenant Colonel Torsten Gewehr.

SOUNDBITE Torsten Gewehr, Lieutenant Colonel in German forces serving with KFOR in Kosovo
"It is very good to have a good partnership and stay very close together. This today it's a good sign for this development."

This match ended in a 5-all draw.

It's just one of the thousands of events that have taken place across the world to mark the iconic WWI moment.
