South African legal expert:, Llewellyn Curlewis, confirms that the Supreme Court of Appeal can impose a longer sentence on Oscar Pistorius if they find him guilty of murder.

"In short, if the Supreme Court of Appeal concludes that she was correct in her observations and conviction of culpable homicide, that's the end of story, they will not revisit the question of sentencing. If they find that she was incorrect, in other words if she materially misdirected herself, they will set aside the conviction of culpable homicide, they will then find him possibly guilty on the murder charge, and they will then, there and then, impose a sentence, which they feel is just and equitable under those circumstances."
