  • Intro:

Olympic officials discuss the possibility of making bids for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, following the conclusion of the 127th IOC session in Monaco on Tuesday (9th December).

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: Lawrence Probst, United States Olympic Committee president (on whether an Olympics in the USA is overdue since Atlanta in 1996):
"It's been a long time. It's been since 1996 and if we were to host the Games in 24 that's, how many years are we talking about there? That's 28 years! That's more than a generation. That's a long time to not have the Games in the United States."

SOUNDBITE: Lawrence Probst, United States Olympic Committee president (on rivals to the possible USA 2024 bid):
"Berlin and Hamburg have talked about bidding, Paris has been mentioned, Rome, Doha, potentially South Africa, Istanbul. There's a lot of potential competition out there but for that's good for the Olympic movement."

SOUNDBITE: Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (on the impact of new bidding reforms meaning the Games will be cheaper to host):
"For a country like Italy and a city like Rome this is fundamental - low cost budget, help from the IOC for the candidacy. This is the basis for our candidacy. I think there is no other way to go ahead."

SOUNDBITE: Michael Vesper, Director General of German Olympic Sports Confederation (on German cities that could host the 2024 Games and whether there was a favourite between Berlin and Hamburg):
"Both (cities) have presented a very good concept. Both are serious with the objective of sustainability. Many facilities are already existing. With regard to the situation of the housing market, it is fact that one needs additional housings (or apartments). And that is why the Olympic village will have a good purchaser."

SOUNDBITE: Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, IOC member (on the Middle East possibly hosting a Games):
"After 24 I think Doha can come back if they wish to run for the Games, or Dubai, or Egypt. I don't know but now I think that it's capable for any of the Middle East cities who have the infrastructure and the interest to come to this bid."
