Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been injured in a two car crash.

A police spokesperson says the black pick-up truck Newton was driving, overturned on a bridge not far from the team's stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The roof of the pick-up truck is caved in, while the other car has front end damage.

Newton is in hospital receiving treatment, along with the other driver.

The Panthers say tests have revealed the 25-year-old has two fractures in his lower back and he'll be held overnight for observation.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

It's unclear whether he'll play this weekend against the Buccaneers.

Newton is known for his mobility.

The former No. 1 overall pick has thrown almost 3,000 yards, run more than 400 yards, accounted for 19 touch downs and taken 11 interceptions this season.
