Michael Clarke will lead Australia in the first cricket test against India in Adelaide.

Clarke hasn't played since last month when he suffered a hamstring injury.

Fast-bowler Mitchell Johnson says it's a huge boost in the wake of Phillip Hughes' tragic loss.

"It's really nice to have him back. He is a strong captain and we need him out there in this tough series."

Hughes has been named as honorary 13th man.

A tribute will be held before the match and his test number of 408 will be worn underneath the crest of every player's shirt.

"It's going to be an emotional morning and probably looking at it from our first little part of the game I guess, you know for me going out there and bowling, the first spell might be the most difficult, then might just get into the game a bit more. But I think mentally, you know, we've had a few training sessions, you know, the vibe is good, everyone's really keen to get out there and play some cricket now and do our best."

Virat Kohli will stand-in as captain for India.

MS Dhoni still hasn't fully recovered from a thumb injury.

Kohli says it'll be an emotion-charged test for everybody involved.

"Well, it was.... obviously quite a sad phase for everyone involved in the game of cricket, and even outside. We've tried to get on with our practices, you know we don't want to be in a position where we're lacking in our preparations going into the first Test. So we've been quite professional with it."
