The first Australia-India test has been postponed following the death of cricketer Phillip Hughes.

The series will now start on the 12 of December in Adelaide to allow players to mourn for their team-mate.

It was due to begin in Brisbane this week, but Indian players remaining in Adelaide fuelled speculation that a move was on the cards.

Hughes' passing has shocked not only cricketers, but sporting fans from all over the world.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott paid tribute to the batsman in the nation's parliament on Monday, a day after his 26th birthday.

"His death has so affected people, because it happened in the midst of life at its most exuberant. He was 63 not out, on his way to a century, and a return to the test team."

Parliamentarians also observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect.

Hughes will be farewelled at a funeral in his home town of Macksville on Wednesday.
