A service to remember Phillip Hughes was held at St Peter's Cathedral just metres away from the Adelaide Oval, the home of South Australia.

The Macksville-born cricketer was batting for South Australia on Tuesday in a domestic match against New South Wales in Sydney when a delivery from bowler Sean Abbott struck him on the top of the neck. Hughes died two days later at the age of 25.

Dean of St Peter's Cathedral, Frank Nelson, reflects on the impact of Hughes' death:

SOUNDBITE (English): Reverend Frank Nelson, Dean of St Peter's Cathedral:

"Every now and then something happens which causes us to stop and think. The death this week of cricketer, Phillip Hughes, is such an event..."

Australia captain Michael Clarke said Hughes' number 64 one-day shirt would be retired following his death.

Hughes's funeral is on Wednesday and Australia's first Test against India will not start on Thursday.
