The Australian Open teed off on Thursday at The Australian Golf Club outside Sydney.

Playing on home soil, Scott Gardiner had the shot of the day with his tee-shot at the par-three eleventh that bagged him a brand new Lexus.

Maybe not the way he would of planned it, but an amazing hole-in-one helping Gardiner to an opening round 68 that leaves him a shot back of the lead.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy was off early and shot a two-under 69 on day 1. That included a birdie at the first and one at the ninth - his final hole - that was set up with this approach as the world number one ended the day two back of the lead at two-under.

Adam Scott had a difficult start to his quest for his home Open title.

The world number three opened with a double bogey, then had three more bogeys on the front nine before recovering on the back to shoot a three-over 74 that leaves him seven shots off the lead.

American Jordan Spieth will head into the second round with that lead after opening with a 67.

Spieth set up birdie on fifteen with this tee shot, then added another with a long birdie putt on sixteen as he finished with a one shot lead at four-under.
