Liverpool's character 'exceptional' - Rodgers

  • Intro:

Ludogorets scored a late equaliser to hold Liverpool to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, but the result ended the home side's hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.

SOUNDBITE (English): Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager

"We needed to come here and put on a performance that was going to allow us to have encouragement going forward, and also to have a result that was going to allow us to be in with qualification from the group. We've had both of them. The reaction to going behind early on was fantastic, I think we've seen the real character from the team tonight. To go a goal behind against a team that has done very well here, in this competition, to show the spirit and the quality of our goals to come back was exceptional."

SOUNDBITE (English): Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager

"Of course we're frustrated at the end, you know, because we've defended very well, and at 2-1 could have been 3-1 or 4-1. But, as I said, we've come away with a point. Real Madrid beat Basel. And at the beginning of the competition we said that it would probably come down to the last game. And to have the last game, to win at Anfield, to qualify, I will take that."

SOUNDBITE (English): Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager (talking about the tactics and Steven Gerrard's role in the game)

"Well the idea was, I felt we needed a more solid structure to the team. We played with two controlling players. His job was to not get ahead of the ball, that was to control the game from behind and stay close together both defensively and offensively. Both good passers of the ball, but both players that can defend and get up to the ball and intercept, and then Steven in front of that. So he probably ran as much since 2009 in that number 10 position. I thought he was excellent, and his job was to get up and support Ricky Lambert. And obviously, Jordan (Henderson) and his running power, and Raheem (Sterling) with his speed on the sides, he could feed them through, and also his experience. So, I thought he was excellent."
