Manchester City v Bayern Munich preview

  • Intro:

Manchester City could be eliminated from the Champions League if they fail to beat Bayern Munich at the Etihad on Tuesday.

    Script:

Reaching the Champions League knock-out phase once in a blue moon is simply not good enough for the modern Manchester City. But qualification for the last 16 is now out of their hands. They face Bayern Munich, who are ten points ahead of them in group E, at the Etihad on Tuesday. Manuel Pellegrini still believes his side can make it through for only the second time in four years, this is the effect he thinks a win against the 2013 champions could have.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester City manager (on what impact a win over Bayern Munich would have on Manchester City's season):

"Well, an important impact because I think that nobody - not me and not the whole team - are happy in the way we played this stage of (the) group. So we have tomorrow our last chance to try to, to win, to beat here Bayern Munich and to continue to having chances to go to the next stage."

Pep Guardiola's men have already qualified for that stage. They are also guaranteed top spot in the group, he says City are on the ropes. Pellegrini will have to answer questions about his team's performance in Europe, if Bayern deliver the knock out blow.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester City manager:

"Well, it's difficult to know just one reason. I agree with you that we played the last four Champions League. In two of them we didn't continue to the stage of, the last 16. Last year we did it and we lost against Barcelona. We will see what happens in this year and after we finish the stage, if we don't qualify we will maybe analyze what happened with this team in Europe, but we must first of all play the game tomorrow and the game against Rome to make a conclusion about that."

City will know what they have to do by the time they kick off as CSKA and Roma starts almost three hours before, if that does not end level, Pellegrini's side will have to win to stand any chance of going through.
