Gael Monfils beat Roger Federer in straight sets to level the Davis Cup final in Lille. Stan Wawrinka beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the other singles rubber to put Switzerland one up earlier on day one.

    Script:

Switzerland and France are level after the first day of singles in the Davis Cup final in Lille.

Stan Wawrinka faced Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening match. The Swiss took the first set. But Tsonga hit back to take the next 6-3.

The Australian Open champion responded to take the third 6-2.

He won 25 points at the net in this rubber and that's how he sealed the win...

A great start for the Swiss then but the second rubber could give the French all important momentum. Roger Federer was fit enough to play after his back injury but Gael Monfils took the first set in just over half an hour.

The Swiss was struggling and just look what it meant to Monfils...

He had never beaten Federer on clay before this match but this was some time to do it, in straight sets too. That delighted many in the record crowd of over 27,000. This could be some weekend.
