The DP World Tour Championship - the climax of the European Tour Race to Dubai - got underway at the Jumeirah Golf Estates' Earth Course on Thursday.

Henrik Stenson made a positive start to his title defence, carding a four-under-par first round 68.

Having birdied the second and sixth holes, Stenson - who won last year's Race to Dubai - dropped back to level-par following consecutive bogeys from the eighth.

He got a little bit lucky with his third at the long par 5 last but he would finish off his 68 with a birdie at the 18th, he sit two shots off the lead.

Scotland's Richie Ramsay finished the day alongside Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, sharing third place on five-under.

But somewhat fittingly, first place after the opening round is partly held by Rory McIlroy, who has already sealed this year's Race to Dubai.

McIlroy, who hasn't played for six weeks, made a fantastic start to his round.

The world number one carded back-to-back birdies at the first two holes and repeated that feat from the fourth to reach four-under after five holes.

That lightning start couldn't be maintained and par putts followed over the next nine holes, but McIlroy rolled in two more birdies at the 15th and 16th and topped the leaderboard after a bogey-free, six-under-par 66.

He was joined in that position by friend and compatriot Shane Lowry.

Lowry started his day with a birdie and he was three-under after five holes.

The Irishman slipped back to two-under following a bogey at the tenth, but a run of four birdies in five holes from the 13th saw Lowry finish the day alongside McIlroy at six-under par.
