Doha to host 2019 IAAF World Championships

    Doha was named by IAAF President Lamine Diack as the host city for the 2019 IAAF World Championships on Tuesday, winning the honour in a second round of voting. Secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, believes that the decision will continue the globalisation of athletics.

    "The World Championship 2019 - was not necessary to close this (envelope).... like this. It's difficult.... to open. To organise, is Doha."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee:
    "It's really our honour and privilege to have the confidence and the trust from the IAAF, to be the organiser of the 2019 World Championship(s) in Doha, and it's for Doha and for the region, and we are very delighted that this will be.... going for the first time to the region. So we know for sure our sport, athletic(s), the mother of our sport, is globalising."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Lamine Diack, IAAF President:
    "I'm convinced they are committed for sport for developing their country and their community and they are doing right things and I think it will continue on that way, starting tomorrow, they will start fighting to have in 2019 wonderful World Championships."
