San Francisco 49ers calm fears after doctor questioned by drug agents

  • Intro:

San Francisco 49ers Director of Communications, Bob Lange, claimed that federal drug enforcement agents were merely conducting random checks after a 49ers physician was questioned following the 49ers 16-10 win over the New York Giants on Sunday (16th November) at MetLife Stadium. Federal drug enforcement agents showed up unannounced on Sunday (16th November) to check at least two visiting NFL teams' medical staffs as part of an investigation into claims by former players that teams mishandled prescription drugs.

The nationwide probe is being directed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York - where the NFL is headquartered - but involves several U.S. attorney's offices.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Bob Lange, San Francisco 49ers Director of Communications

"They are random checks to team physicians as they travel to see if anybody is transferring controlled substances across state lines. That is all the information we have."

Reporter Question: Do you guys carry controlled substances across state lines?

" No, we have medicine that is used for our players. Any sports team that travels throughout the country, the doctors take that with them."

Reporter's Question: Everything is registered here in the state of New Jersey?

"I couldn't tell you that. I'm a PR (public relations) guy, I'm not a doctor, I wouldn't be able to tell you that."
