Kenyan runners dominate New York Marathon

  • Intro:

Kenya's Wilson Kipsang and Mary Keitany won the men's and women's New York City Marathon titles on Sunday, with both pulling away in the final mile.

    Script:

50,000 runners converging on one of New York's most famous bridges could only mean one thing.

The start of the 2014 city marathon.

Cold and cloudy conditions met the start of the women's race.

Portugal's Sara Moreira paced the elite runners before Kenya's Jemima Sumgong and Mary Keitany pulled away from the pack.

It was Keitany who crossed the line first.

Finishing the 26 mile course in just under 2 and a half hours ahead of Sumgong.

Not a bad effort when you consider it's her first marathon since 2012 after taking time off for the birth of her second child.

The men's race began a half hour after the women's.

Two-time defending champion Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya led the pack just past the halfway mark.

But his compatriot Wilson Kipsang took the lead towards the end of the race.

Kipsang and Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa then separated themselves from the pack.

But the Kenyan soon pulled away to cross the line first in just over 2 hours.

He's now won titles in Berlin, London and New York, plus a $500,000 World Marathon Majors bonus.
