Roger Federer was made to fight all the way by local favourite Jeremy Chardy before reaching the third round of the Paris Masters on Wednesday.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion completed a 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 victory at the Palais Omnisports to keep his challenge for the year-end No. 1 ranking well on track.

Federer could have sealed a quicker win but Chardy, who beat him on clay at the Rome Masters earlier this season, saved two match points at 5-4 in the second set before forcing a decider with a stunning crosscourt forehand winner.

Where Chardy fell short, another local, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, delighted the home crowd with a 6-2 4-6 6-2 win over Jurgen Melzer and will next face Kei Nishikori who beat Tommy Robredo 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile Andy Murray will have to face Grigor Dimitrov in the next round after the Bulgarian was a 6-0 6-3 winner against Pablo Cuevas.
