Training has to adapt with travel- Caldwell

  • Intro:

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson practiced for the second successive day on Thursday (23rd October), ahead of the NFL International Series game against the Atlanta Falcons in London

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions head coach (on Calvin Johnson practising on Wednesday):

"Well he was limited and he did what the doctors allowed him to do. The big thing is typically that when they ramp up their activity that way, the most important thing is what they feel like the following day. And today he came back feeling good and so that's encouraging. We knew he was coming along and the face he could take part in a little bit of practice yesterday was good."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions wide receiver (on how he felt practising on Wednesday):

"Good man, we were doing everything from straightforward running to moving laterally well. Things are going good you know. We're moving in a positive direction."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions wide receiver (on whether he'll play Sunday):

"We haven't pushed it too much. We don't want to push it to the point where we get a set back. Like I said, it's getting better and better."
Question: "Is that a tough thing to balance because obviously you want to test it?"
Johnson: "Yeah. You want to push it, I want to push it but we're just trying to be smart about it you know. I'm trying to take good advice from our training staff which they're giving me. I'm just going with that."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions head coach (on adapting to being in London and having a good first practice on Wednesday):

"The thing about it was that typically that when you travel this far there's a chance that your practices aren't going to be as brisk as you'd hope them to be - not as much crisp hitting and things of that nature because of a little bit of jet lag. Some of it, I have to attribute it to the fact that the people that gave given us information, in terms of how to prepare to come over here and play and practice, it certainly did appear that it worked well on day one."
