North-east Spain provides the battleground for this week's Rally de Espana - the penultimate round of the 2014 World Rally Championship.
The event got underway with a single 3.2-kilometre Special Stage through the streets of downtown Barcelona.
Daniel Sordo posted the fifth-fastest time in front of his home fans, clocking a time of three minutes, 42.7 seconds.
Jari-Matti Latvala - the only driver who can deny Sebastien Ogier a second successive WRC title - finished half-a-second ahead of Sordo's mark, clocking a time of three minutes, 42.2 seconds.
The Finn finished just two-tenths-of-a-second behind Belgian Thierry Neuville, who clinched third place in three minutes, 42 seconds.
Frenchman Ogier needs to finish above Latvala in Sunday's final timesheets to seal his second world title with a round to spate.
The Citroen driver suggested this could be his weekend by going second fastest on Friday, covering the stage in three minutes, 40.9 seconds.
But even Ogier couldn't get near the pace of Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen, who set a fastest time of three minute, 39.1 seconds in his Volkswagen.
Racing continues with six more Special Stages on a mix of gravel and asphalt surfaces.
