The first round of the Asian Tour's 2014 Macau Open teed off at the Macau Golf and Country Club on Thursday.
Four-time major winner Ernie Els is the headline act of the week - and the South African started off brilliantly with a birdie at the first.
Els then hit the base flag at the par-three fourth, before the ball rolled back to about 10 feet.
Els missed that birdie putt but still made the turn at two-under.
The South African lost some momentum on the back nine, but the 45-year-old finish on a high with birdie at the 18th to finish with a one-under 70.
The other big name in the tournament, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, one of the early starters of the day, had very little going for him in the opening round as he finished with a one-over-par 72.
Veteran Zhang Lian Wei of China, who has never missed a cut at this tournament, looked to maintain that record with a two-under 69.
He is tied for 19th.
Last week's Hong Kong Open winner Scott Hend of Australia continued his rich vein of form by shooting a brilliant 9-under 62.
The defending champion at Macau, carded one bogey, one eagle and eight birdies.
Despite carding a 62, Hend lies in outright second as India's Anirban Lahiri, last year's runner-up to Hend, went one better with a flawless 10-under, 61.
