    Roger Federer has secured vital points in his race to end the year as number one, after overcoming Gilles Muller in the opening round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

    In front of a home crowd, Roger Federer continued his push for the year-end number one ranking spot at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

    The top seed eased through to the second round by overcoming Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in just three quarters of an hour.

    Federer hit 12 winners, including five aces in a 24 minute opening set.

    He's now won 52 matches and only lost nine at the tournament, where he's reached 10 finals - winning five.

    The Swiss master will meet Denis Istomin in the second round on Thursday.

    In the other match Grigor Dimitrov needed three sets and an hour and 45 minutes to overcome German wild card Alexander Zverev and reach round two.

    The Bulgarian fifth seed prevailed 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
