Tommy Robredo defeated John Isner for the first time in their fourth meeting at the Valencia Open first round on Tuesday.

Robredo saved all five break points he faced to beat the fifth seed 7-6 6-3 in 81 minutes.

The 32-year-old will face Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan in the next stage.

Also victorious was fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who cruised past Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.

The fourth seed Catalan won 6-4 6-4 to beat the qualifier and record his first victory at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in five years.

For once Catalonia and Madrid have something in common. Madridista Fernando Verdasco also booked his place in the next round after he overcame Leonardo Mayer.

The world number 35 came through in three sets, 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Verdasco awaits the winner of tomorrow's match between compatriot David Ferrer and Andreas Seppi of Italy.
