    Top seed Serena Williams defeated Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 on Monday (20 October) in the opening group match at the 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore.

    The WTA Finals kicked off with Ana Ivanovic taking on the World No 1, Serena Williams in Singapore.

    The Serbian found a forehand winner to earn break point at four all.

    Yet Serena held serve and then had two break points for the set. Ivanovic with the dreaded double fault at set point down.

    Both upped their game in the second. The rallies extended, yet the American found that extra gear.

    As in the first set, Williams had two break points for the second & the match.

    Ivanovic put the forehand long and Serena took it 6-4, 6-4.

    The World No 1's win was her 16th consecutive in the World Tour Finals as the American looks to win her third straight Finals tournament.
