The Valencia Open got underway on Monday with some of the lesser names in action at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciencies.

First round play started with Lu Yen-Hsun facing Spanish world number 38 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Lu had lost three of his four previous meetings with Garcia-Lopez - including a straight sets defeat at this year's US Open - but the rising Taiwanese star came out on top this time around.

The world number 42 claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win and will face number five seed John Isner or Tommy Robredo in the second round.

Marcel Granollers followed his compatriot Garcia-Lopez out of the tournament at the first opportunity, retiring while trailing 6-2, 3-1 to fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

World number 63 Carreno Busta advanced to a second round meeting with either number four seed Feliciano Lopez or Slovakian Norbert Gombos.

Another Slovakian - Martin Klizan - sealed his place in the last 16 on Monday, knocking out Macedonian-born American wildcard 6-3, 6-3.

Klizan's prize for that straight sets win is a meeting with either number seven seed Kevin Anderson or Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.
