Players were introduced at Monday's opening night of the WTA Finals in the usual spectacular style.

The crowd then witnessed Simona Halep of Romania comfortably defeat Canada's Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-3.

Both players were making their first appearance at the season-ending championships, and Halep was in fine form.

The Romanian lost only four points when converting her first serve.

Bouchard on the other hand was well below her best, she racked up 30 unforced errors on the evening against Halep's 11.

Halep broke her opponent in the very first game and set the pace for the remainder of the match as she raced out to a 4-0 lead.

She never looked back and the numbers demonstrated the one way traffic of the encounter.

SOUNDBITE (English) Simona Halep, Romania, world number 4:

"It was a great match for me. I started really well this tournament and, you know, I'm really happy because I found my way to fight and to play aggressive to stay there very focussed every point and to play my best."

SOUNDBITE (English) Eugenie Bouchard, Canada, world number 5:

"Yeah, that's always my game still, to try (to) go for it and be aggressive, and sometimes it doesn't work out as well. But today lack of consistency was definitely the issue. And, you know, I haven't felt like I've been fully practising as I've wanted to the past few weeks and maybe just felt a bit rusty."

In the earlier encounter, Serena Williams beat Ana Ivanovic 6-4 6-4 in the other Red Group match-up.
