There were quarter-finals wins for fourth seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic and Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu in the Kremlin Cup on Friday (17th October).

Fourth seed Lucie Safarova beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, in the quarter-finals of the Kremlin Cup on Friday.

The WTA tournament being played in Moscow saw home favourtie Kuznetsova race to a 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the Russian collpased to lose the set 6-4.

Safarova went on to take a tight second 7-5, booking her place in the semi-finals, where she will face Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu.

Begu started slowing in her quarter-final clash, losing the first set against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 6-1.

It was Begu's first ever quarter-final at a top level event but she showed plenty of resilience to take the next two sets and seal her place in the semi-finals.
