Number two seed Graeme McDowell had won 15 of his previous 17 matches at the World Match Play - but slipped to defeat to Mikko Ilonen.

The Finn carded seven birdies to secure his first win of the tournament by a 2 and 1 margin.

Henrik Stenson was three down early on but produced some masterful golf on the back nine to triumph over the Francesco Molinari, ending the Italian’s hopes.

While Patrick Reed needed a positive result over Paul Casey to keep his hopes of advancing alive - and the American delivered a 2 and 1 win to leave the four players in his pool locked together on two points each heading into the final group match.
