From Rugby League to the NFL

Friday, October 17 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

The coach of the American NFL team, the Seattle Seahawks has been talking about the possibility of signing Jarryd Hayne, the Australian Rugby League player. Pete Carroll said that any player trying to make the transition from rugby to the NFL is in for a difficult challenge.

    Script:

(Q.There's a lot of interest in Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne. What's his status? What do you guys think of him?)

SOUNDBITE: (English) Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks coach:

"Our scout Down Under has been on this for some time now. He's an incredible athlete and a great competitor, which is the kind of stuff we like, so we'll see where it goes. I'm afraid to mention anything because I'm not sure of the rights here and things like that and I don't know about about the contract issues down there. So we'll leave that one up to (Seahawks general manager) John (Schneider) to figure that out."

    (Q. How do you see him? From what you've seen, what sort of position do you think he could play and how do you think he'd make the transition (to the NFL)?)

SOUNDBITE: (English) Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks coach

"I don't think I'm able to talk about that about him, as far as I know. We couldn't talk about a player on another team, we just want to make sure we don't mess it up. As soon as we're free and I know what the rulings are I'll give you some scoop on it ok. But it's a pretty exciting thought anyway, it's an exciting thought. I've always thought it would be cool to recruit down there and all that, because there are some great players, and it's a great game and it's a very physical and demanding game, so those guys have all the same stuff we're looking for in our guys. So I'll stay real general on that if that's ok."
